Newmarket on Fergus (5-03) vs Truagh-Clonlara (0-00)
Venue: Shannon Camogie pitch

Referee: Áine NicCormaic

On a sunny but cold Sunday morning, the U13B championship final battle took place in Shannon where Newmarket-on-Fergus were victorious. They somehow managed to keep a tough and resilient Truagh-Clonlara scoreless over the entire match.

Amy Madden was 1st to put up a score for Newmarket when she rattled the back of the net. Some minutes later Saoirse Reidy brought that goal tally to 2. For the remainder of the 1st half the ball was toing and froing between the sides. With some exceptional blocking and hooking also from both sides. Aine O’Callaghan for Newmarket was unlucky when some of her shots from play just went wide of the post and Truagh’s Rosin Hannan was also ill-fated not to score after many of her runs on goal were scuppered by a strong Newmarket half back line.

In the second half Newmarket picked up where they left off when Saoirse make a great run on goal and was duly rewarded for her efforts when her shot hit the back of the net. A lot of the play in the 2nd half was kept within reach of the Truagh goals as their backs, especially Amy Reilly, fought hard to keep the Newmarket forwards out, who were duly backed up by midfielders Emma Crowe and Andrea Coffey. But Newmarket’s Aine finally had her efforts rewarded as she went on to score 2 great goals. Aine and Amy also scored 3 points between them in the second half to give Newmarket-on-Fergus a 5-03 win.

It may not have gone Truagh-Clonlara’s way but every girl on that pitch gave it their all and there’s no doubt that we will be hearing about those players in the future.

As for Newmarket-on-Fergus panel the future is very bright, with some exceptional play from all the girls and with a fantastic management team behind them, Newmarket will be a team to look out for in the future.

Áine NicCormaic was, as always, outstanding as referee.
