U13A Cup final

Clooney Quin 4-1 Crusheen  1-3

Referee: Aine Ni Cormaic @ Clarecastle GAA

The climax of the U13A championship took place in Clarecastle between neighbours, Clooney Quin and Crusheen. Played in terrible weather conditions, credit must go to both teams for producing a top quality match. From the throw in both teams were intent on attacking. Crusheen made the early running. Their attack was broken up and a fine solo run from Emma Quinn saw her deliver to Ellen Collins, who finished to the net to give Clooney Quin the perfect start after two minutes. This was soon followed by good interplay between Orna Moynihan and Saoirse Keogh scoring a point to extend Clooney Quins lead. Crusheen continued to bring the game to Clooney Quin and created a number of chances. Good work from Faye Dean and Aoife Rodgers led to her goal ward shot being blocked for a forty five. Another fine move between Rodgers and Dean saw a goal bound shot flash by the post. Crusheen continue to pile on the pressure but Clooney Quins defence was equal to the challenge. Crusheen created a goal chance midway through the when Aoife Rodgers fed Mary Hanrahan whose shot was well saved by Emer Mc Gee. Further efforts from Siomha Perill and Sarah O Donnell went agonisingly wide for Crusheen. Crusheen were to rue the chances that went amiss. On nineteen minutes, good work from Ellen Mc Sharry led to her finding Ella Moloney, who took on the Crusheen defence and hand passed to the net to extend Clooneys lead. On twenty one minutes Crusheen finally got on the scoreboard, good work from Faye Dean in midfield saw her find Aoife Rogers who laid off to Mary Hanrahan who buried the ball in the bottom corner. However, Clooney Quin responded almost immediately. A long delivery into the Crusheen defence saw a goal mouth scramble and a third goal, a second green flag for Ellen Collins . Crusheen were unfortunate not to score a second goal when a rasping shot from a Mary Hanrahan rattled the post and bounced to safety. Crusheen ended the half with the last score when Mary Hanrahan  scored a fine point from a free from an acute angle leaving the halftime score Clooney Quin 3-1 to Crusheen 1-1.

The second half saw a similar pattern to the first. Crusheen needing to cut the gap attacked from the off , put the Clooney defence under pressure. The first score of the half came from Crusheen when Hannah Gleeson burst from defence and sister Grace scored a fine point. Crusheen created a number of chances but could not convert them. Clooney Quins forays into Crusheens half were scarce, but, when they did, they found Crusheens half backs Caoimhe Clancy and Ava Lyons determined not to be beaten. Crusheen continued to pile on the pressure to cut the gap and another point cut the deficit to 4 points entering the latter stages of the game. Clooney Quin were defending admirably and Claire Murphy and captain Amy Senton were to the fore in breaking up Crusheen attacks and launching counter attacks. Defences for both teams were on top in the second half. With time running out, Crusheen threw everything at Clooney Quin to cut the deficit, keeper Eimear McGee made a number of saves and excellent clearances. However it was Clooney Quin who got the next score. Their half back line broke up Crusheens attack and good work saw the ball find Ellen Collins who buried a cracking goal to the net to effectively end the contest. To Crusheens credit, they kept going, but, time was against them. The final score was 4-1 to 1-3 in a very entertaining contest. Best for the victors were Sarah Manley, Orna Moynihan, Ellie McSherry, Saoirse Keogh, Claire Murphy, Amy Senton, Ella Moloney, Ellen Collins and Emma Quinn. Crusheen had good performances from Hannah and Grace Gleeson, Caoimhe Clancy and Faye Dean.
