Fr McNamara Park: Sixmilebridge 3-11 Newmarket on Fergus 3-14

Saturday saw the much-anticipated clash between Newmarket-on-Fergus and Sixmilebridge in Round 2 of the Senior Championship. The last time these two teams met, it was back in March in the league under lights at the UL Sports Arena, where the Blues had a comprehensive win over their near neighbours. However on Saturday afternoon Sixmilebridge came out with all guns blazing and in the first half they were very much in charge of the game, but the ever-resilient Newmarket came back fighting in the second half and won on a score line of 3-14 to 3-11.

In the first half Sixmilebridge were first to score with Finia O’Brien raising the green flag. Jenny Kelly soon followed with a point for the Blues. Niamh Cory was next to hit the back of the net for Sixmilebridge after breaking through the Newmarket defence line. Carol O’Leary retaliated for the Blues with a great solo run and ended up hand-passing the ball into the back of the net for Newmarket. But Sixmilebridge weren’t letting that go, they very soon afterwards raised the green flag for a third time through Corry again. The teams went on to exchange some points for the remainder of the half with Sixmilebridge outscoring their neighbours and splitting the posts with eight points to Newmarket’s five, leaving the half-time score line at Sixmilebridge 3-8 to Newmarket-on-Fergus 1-5.

The second half got underway with Newmarket taking the reins. Ellen Casey was first off the mark with a point for the Blues and the tightening up of the Newmarket defence kept Sixmilebrige at bay. Then substitute Michelle McMahon cemented her place by scoring 1-1 in quick succession. Newmarket scored two more additional points before Sixmilebridge managed to put a score up in the second half after seven minutes with a free from Morey. Then with some well taken frees by Aine O’Brien, Newmarket were back in contention for the win and the margin was down to two points. Morey scored another point to extend the lead to three points, but it was still only one score between them. Then as she had in the first half, O’Leary broke through the Sixmilebridge defence and hit the back of the net. The sides were now tied, 3-10 apiece. Suddenly it was all to play for. The clock was dwindling down and both teams needed the win. Tensions were high, judgements were questioned and there was nothing between the teams. Both fought hard but Newmarket managed to convert a ‘45 and a free to go two points up in normal time. Then in injury time Jenny Jelly got the last score of the match to finish up Newmarket-on-Fergus 3-14 to Sixmilebridge 3-11.

Fr McNamara Park: Scariff Ogonnelloe 2-15 Clooney Quin 1-9

Fr. Mc Namara Park saw the meeting of Clooney-Quin and Scariff-Ogonolloe on Saturday evening in the third of a triple header at Clare Camogie HQ. While Scariff-Ogonolloe emerged victorious the score line didn’t describe the battle that ensued on the field. The wet conditions made the ground soft and slippy and gave both teams extra impediments to endure. With a win for each side in round 1 the pressure was on to continue their winning ways.

Mairead Scanlan opened the scoring with a point from play at the two-minute mark with Aoife Power following up with a free after a foul on Scariff Ogonnelloes Marian Rodgers. Clooney Quin responded well hitting three points in succession including a superb effort from Emma Considine.  The first goal of the game came from Scariff Ogonnelloes Danielle Sheedy almost at the end of the first quarter with the sliothar just getting past Clooneys Marie Keating.  Keating was tested soon after with another goal from Scariff Ogonnelloes Aoife Power. Four more points from Scariff Ogonnelloes Mairead Scanlan and three more for Clooney Quin left the half time score 2-8 to 0-6 in favour of Scariff Ogonnelloe.

Clooney Quin introduced Niamh McGee at the break and she immediately showed her presence clearing ball from the full back line. Scariff-Ogonolloe opened the half with three points through Danielle Sheedy, Jennifer Daly and Aoife Power before Clooney-Quin got on the scoreboard with a point from Deirdre Murphy. An unfortunate ankle injury to Nicole O’Riordan was a significant loss to Clooney-Quin. With Scariff Ogonnelloe now in the lead by ten points Clooney Quin responded with a brace of points. The East Clare outfit kept pursing the win with two more points for Mairead Scanlan and Aoife Power. With three minutes of normal time remaining, Clooney Quin won a free which Deirdre Murphy sent to the back of the net. Scanlon had the last say in what was a physical game with a point to leave the final score Scariff Ogonelloe 2-15 Clooney Quin 1-9.

Ruan GAA: Ruan 2-3 Corofin 1-14

The cut and thrust of this local derby had all the anticipated edge and rivalry to the delight of spectators in the new stand at Ruan.  A performance from the home team that should have produced a tighter score line, will both encourage and frustrate their management.

Attacking from the flag drop, and with the strong breeze, Ruan should have been ahead early as Louise McDonnell and Alice Casey both went wide; the post scuppering the shot from Casey.  Lisa Whelan then pointed in the seventh minute with a good score from play from out on the ’45 line. Starting to hit their range, Corofin put over 5 unanswered points from Aoibhean Malone and Siobhain Lane before Whelan again pointed from play and Casey pounced on a rebound to raise a green flag. However, indiscipline played its part for the home side as the visitors took control with 4 more points before half time to leave the half time score Corofin 0-9 Ruan 1-2.

The wind had dropped as the second half started, though Corofin needed no assistance as they extended their lead further.  More indiscretions forced referee Noel Quinn to award a penalty in the 42nd minute.  Aoibheann Malones shot was half blocked on the line by Rebecca Crowe and the rebound found the back the net. Both sides battled on but Corofin were the more dominant and added to their tally on the scoreboard to run out winners 1-14 to 2-3.

Tulla GAA: Tulla 2-6 Broadford 2-8

Broadford were the first team to put scores on the board with from a ‘45 and another from play in the seventh minute but Tulla were not long responding with a goal from play to go one point ahead. In an unusual pairing for Broadford, Emma Cooper and Aoife Dillon were heading up the full forward line and a point from Emma Cooper followed up shortly after with a goal showed that this was going to be an exciting match to finish off the weekend. Both teams seemed reasonably matched with periods of play at either end of the pitch but a strike from outside the box landed Broadford’s Aoife Dillon a goal in the 16th minute that gave Broadford the edge and lead at half-time 1-4 to 2-6.

Whilst Broadford took the first point in the second-half, Tulla came back on to the pitch in fighting spirit and looked to be more determined than at the start of this match. Two early wides for Tulla were soon forgotten after a point from play and a goal in the 13th minute helped build up their scored and signalled a possible turn-around.  All the girls played well in this exciting and entertaining game that finished with a win for Broadford 2-6 to 2-8.

Clarecastle GAA: Clarecastle/Ballyea 1-3 Parteen 6-10

Scoreline suggests this was an easy victory for the Parteen ladies but it was a very competitive game with great individual battles throughout the pitch. Parteen's defence were impressive with Sinead Barry providing her usual solid performance between the posts.

At the opposite end Parteen forwards were combining well to create numerous scoring opportunities. A super work rate by the Parteen midfield ensured a steady feed of ball into the forwards.  Half time score had Parteen leading 2-3 to 0-1. Laura Craughan had replaced Melanie Power before the break after sustaining an injury and she emerged as Parteen's  top scorer of the game with a personal tally of 4-3.  Parteen made three further substitutions and the fresh legs along with some positional switches ensured Parteen continued to widen the gap on the scoresheet. The skills of the game especially hooking and blocking were in plentiful supply by both sides. However, at the final whistle, it was a good win for Parteen with a scoreline 6-10 to 1-03
