Fr McNamara Park: Kilkishen/Bodyke 2-14 Newmarket on Fergus 3-9

Underdogs Kilkishen-Bodyke ensured they took the round 2 game of the Senior Championship against a hotly tipped Newmarket on Fergus side on Saturday last in Fr McNamara Park. The sides were level at half time but a determined and strong Kilkishen-Bodyke side ensured they ran out winners on a scoreline of 2-14 to 3-9.

One change to the program for Kilkishen-Bodyke saw Leah Minogue make her senior debut to replace Ciara Ryan in the starting fifteen.

Aoife Ryan and Leah Minogue opened the scoring for Kilkishen-Bodyke before Jenny Kelly replied for Newmarket. Kelly came up with the goods again at the ten-minute mark to which Kate O’Gorman replied with a huge strike off her left side seeing it 0-4 to 0-2 in favour of Kilkishen/Bodyke. Newmarket upped it for the remainder of the first quarter with Zoe McInerney pointing two frees and the hard-working Katie O Flanagan blasting to the net to give Newmarket a three-point cushion at the water break.

A very stop-start second quarter followed, which saw Kilkishen-Bodyke add further points from Siobhan Lenihan (0-5) and Kate O’Gorman (0-1). Kilkishen/Bodyke ran the changes in the backs with Eilis Whitney replacing Nollaig Baker which limited the Newmarket forwards to three points through Kelly, McInerney and O'Flanagan seeing the half time score level at 1-7 to 0-10.

Kaci Toomey pointed on the restart to put Newmarket one up before the O’Gorman sisters Niamh and Kate raised green flags for Kilkishen-Bodyke, with Aoife Ryan and Kate O’Gorman adding points to Kilkishen-Bodykes lead of 2-12 to 1-8. Newmarket needed a moment of magic and it came from the ever-reliable Kelly who got inside her player and struck a low hard ball to the bottom corner of the net. The whistle went for the water break and the scoreboard read 2-12 to 2-8 in favour of Kilkishen/Bodyke.

The last quarter saw Lenihan add a further point for Kilkishen-Bodyke before Newmarket were awarded a penalty. McInerney having won the ball, turned her player and was running towards goal when she was hauled down in the square, winning a penalty. Laura McMahon stood up to take it and blasted it to the net, and the gap was back to two with six minutes left on the clock.

Ryan scored a point from a Kate O’Gorman sideline cut before McInerney added a further point for Newmarket to leave the full-time score Kilkishen-Bodyke 2-14 Newmarket 3-9.

Fr McNamara Park: Scariff Ogonnelloe 1-15 St Josephs 2-2

In the second round of four, Scariff Ogonnelloe faced St Joseph’s with Scariff Ogonnelloe attempting to build from their previous win against Kilkshen Bodyke and St Joseph’s looking for a first win in the 2021 Senior Camogie Championship. It was Scariff Ogonnelloe who built on their success from round one to make it four points from a possible four, on a score line of 1-15 to St Joseph’s 2-02. In what was a tough physical game played in relatively good weather, the end result was hard earned by Scariff Ogonnelloe who were made sweat by St Joseph’s intense work rate and athletic abilities.

Scariff Ogonnelloe were first on the attack with an efficient play ending in a point from Mairead Scanlan’s first attempt from play. Play was concentrated in St Joseph’s back line in the opening minutes and a messy ball in the square was pounced on by Alva Rodgers who made no doubt in ensuring the ball crossed the white line to record the match’s first goal. This seemed to rally St Joseph’s as they piled the pressure on and made good progress in the middle of the pitch to launch several attacks at the East Clare defence. Such was the pressure mounted by the maroon and white that several frees were awarded by referee Kevin Walsh. Two early missed frees were big disappointments for St Joseph’s which would have given them confidence in the opening minutes. Play up to the first water break was hotly contested and two points were added by both sides with the score after fifteen minutes being 1-03 to 2 points. This score line arguably failed to reflect the gains being made by St Joseph’s, mainly by Aisling Reidy in the middle of the field and strong full back line of Kate Dillon, Megan O’ Brien and Sinead O’ Connor whose defensive efforts kept Joseph’s in contention. The second quarter commenced with increased intensity and hard work by Amy Barrett and Jennifer Daly in Scariff Ogonnelloe’s half forward line and they increased the lead in to 1-06 to two points going into the half time break. St Joseph’s achilles heel in failing to convert from several chances in open play and frees during the second quarter left them with a hill to climb going into half time. A near goal constructed by Louise Woods just before half time could have resulted in a very different picture. This pressure was being met capably by Scariff Ogonnelloe which was a mixture of new and veteran talent and undoubtedly the experience of county players Susan Daly and Ciara Doyle saved the East Clare side on more than one occasion.

The second half began in the same vein as the first, as a real physical encounter with St Jospeh’s using their physicality to win numerous rucks. Scariff Ogonnelloe scored first as they enjoyed increased periods of domination thanks to Amy Barrett, capably supported by Mairead Scanlan. The latter’s free taking ability helped the East Clare side to increase the deficit to 1-11 to 1-02 at the second water break. Failures to convert loose ball around the goal mouth prevented them from comprehensively increasing their lead as Karen McMahon kept St. Joseph’s from going further behind. Scariff Ogonnelloe benefited from Alva Rodgers’s and substitute Cliona McNamara’s physicality which helped ensure simple, decisive scoring. This is not to say St Jospeh’s failed to meet the challenge and their mounting pressure in the ruck enabled them to mount counter attacks and they frequently overturned Scariff Ogonnelloe. St Joseph’s constant questioning of the Scariff Ogonnelloe defence earned them frees. Two frees hit in around the square were not dealt with by Scariff Ogonnelloe and were St Jospeh’s efficiently converted resulting in the green flag being raised twice, one on each side of the water break. Both teams made more substitutions after the final water break with Danielle Beston offering a threatening presence in the half forward line for Scariff Ogonnelloe and Ciara Guilfoyle making some decisive runs. St Joseph’s threw everything at Scariff Ogonnelloe for the final fifteen minutes. This young team aided by the experience of the likes of Louise Woods offers great potential for the future of camogie in Doora Barefield. Eventually, the experience of Scariff Ogonnelloe secured the victory on a score line of 1-15 to 2-02. While it was not to be for the maroon and white, they asked questions of Scariff Ogonnelloe and time will only tell if the blue and navy are able to answer similar questions posed later in more tightly contested matches.

Best on the day for Scariff Ogonnelloe were Susan Daly, Labhaoise O’Donnell, Alva Rodgers, Amy Barrett, with Louise Woods, Chloe Towey, Kate Dillon and Sinead O’ Connor being best for St Joseph’s.

Scariff Ogonnelloe: Rachael Daly; Alison McGee, Susan Daly, Bonnie Wiley Murphy; Rachel Minogue, Ciara Doyle, Labhaoise O’Donnell; Lynda Daly, Abby Walsh; Lorraine Grady, Amy Barrett, Jennifer Daly; Alva Rodgers, Aisling Corbett, Mairead Scanlan.

Tulla GAA: Tulla 1-10 Clooney Quin 3-17

This game was played in ideal conditions in a lovely autumn evening in Dr. Daly Park. Clooney/Quin were quick out of the blocks with a flurry of scores in the opening five minutes, Emma Quinn with the goal and Deirdre Murphy with a brace of points. Tulla began to settle and points from Bridin Dinan and Aoife Dooley got Tulla on the score sheet. The first quarter which already had a green flag raised saw two more as Sinéad Conlon hit the back of the Clooney Quin net with Emma Considine striking to the Tulla net to see the score Clooney Quin 2-4 Tulla 1-2. The second quarter was quieter with both teams scoring a few points each leaving the score at half time Clooney Quin 2-8 Tulla 1-5.

Clooney upped the tempo in the third quarter and showed their experience as they pulled away significantly from Tulla, with Considine scoring all of Clooney’s five points to Tulla’s two scores. The Tulla defence were under a lot of pressure and Clooney capitalised on this period of dominance. Tulla came out fighting in the final quarter but it wasn’t to be their day. For Clooney Quin the move of Deirdre Murphy moved to full forward paid dividends as Murphy raised a green flag almost immediately and had the last say in the game as she split the posts for a white flag before the full-time whistle. Strong for Clooney were Ciara Grogan, Emma Considine, Emily Costelloe, Orlaith Duggan and Deirdre Murphy. Best for Tulla include Bridin Dinan, Jennifer Nicholas, Aoife Dooley and Orna Mulconroy.

Whitegate GAA: Whitegate 3-11 Eire Og 2-7

Round 2 of the Intermediate Championship saw Whitegate take on Eire Og on Whitegate’s home soil. Two teams eager for victory and to progress to the next round. Both teams started with intensity and the thrown-in was won straight away by Whitegate and laid off to Susan Fahy who quickly ran all the way towards the Eire Og goal and within the first minute proceeded to bury it to the back of the Eire Og net. Eire Og were stunned but quickly gathered the sliothar from the puck out and answered Whitegate when they put it between the Whitegate posts to get their opening score. Before the first water break Eire Og added a further two points to their tally, one from play and another from a free. Whitegate were unfortunate to have some missed frees but a strong breeze didn’t help. A foul on Greta Hickey gave Susan Fahy another free scoring chance which she converted with ease. After the water break a foul on Eire Og within the square, gave them a penalty which Ella Cahill went on to drive past Whitegate’s goalie Lauren Solan. Following the puckout a foul on Lisa Donoghue up the field, gave a free to Whitegate. Solan from her goals stepped up to take this long range free which headed to the square. The sliothar was caught by Aideen Hickey and a crafty pass to sister Greta Hickey, who put it over the Eire Og bar. Before half time another converted free from Fahy gave Whitegate a total score of 1-3. Meanwhile Eire Og added two points to their tally both coming from frees. Eire Og might have felt a bit unlucky when what looked like a dead cert goal which they were denied when it hit the post and bounced back to go wide. Eire Og still had the lead at half time and were two points ahead, 1-5 to 1-3. The second half started in a similar manner to the first with Whitegate wining the throw in which was collected by Fahy who went on to score a point. Following the puckout Whitegate’s Fahy was fouled, and this gave Whitegate another free. Fahy herself took the free which went all the way to the back of the Eire Og net and raised the second green flag for Whitegate. This put the Geata Ban girls ahead by a point. Whitegate converted two more frees through Fahy to increase their lead. Eire Og added two more points to their score sheet before the second water break, one from a free and another from play. In the last quarter Whitegate moved into a higher gear and added another 1-5 to their score. Three of which came from play from Greta Hickey and Fahy after getting a pass from Aideen Hickey went on to score her third goal making it a hat trick for herself. Fahy also added another point from a free. Some outstanding saves from Whitegate’s goalkeeper Lauren Solan kept the Eire Og girls from clawing back any of the lead that Whitegate had built up. Eire Og managed to score a consolation goal in the last quarter, but this was all too late as Whitegate emerged the well deserving winners when the final whistle blew.
