Clarecastle GAA: Scariff Ogonnelloe 1-20 Kilmaley 1-4

Clooney GAA: Sixmilebridge 2-9 Feakle Killanena 4-18

Feakle Killanena recorded their first victory at senior level with a win over Sixmilebridge at Clooney on Saturday aftrenoon.  In a match which finished on a score line of 4-18 to 2-9 it was a much closer contest than the score line suggests.  The first quarter was a very physical battle with both sets of defenders working well to keep the score line to 5 points to 3 in favour of Feakle Killanena at the first water break.

On commencement of the second quarter the Feakle Killanena forwards were winning more ball and winning frees in scoreable positions. Lorna McNamara converted four frees, with Zi Yan Spillane and Roisin McMahon adding a point each from play.  Sixmilebridge kept the pressure on and on the stroke of half time their efforts were rewarded with a goal, Feakle Killanena 0-11 Sixmilebridge 1-5.

Robyn Conway, Claire McNamara and Laura McGrath contributed a point each from play early in the second half.  With just five minutes played in the second half, Sixmilebridge were reduced to fourteen players following a foul on Zi Yan Spillane by Sarah Loughnane.  Soon afterwards Claire McNamara found the net for Feakle Killanena’s first goal.  Sixmilebridge did not give up and responded with their second green flag goal in the forty third minute.  With the numerical advantage the Feakle Killanena forwards were getting a greater supply of goal.  Laura McGrath was fouled on route to goal and the resulting penalty was scored by Evelyn Duggan.  This gave Feakle Killanena a 6-point advantage at the second water break, 2-14 to 2-8.

It was only in the last quarter that the lead widened as Feakle Killanena pulled away, outscoring the Bridge by 2-4 to 0-1 with the goals coming from Robyn Conway and Lorna McNamara.

Regan Conway and Eileen Daly got on a lot of ball in defence and distributed it well up field.  Zi Yan Spillane and Evelyn Duggan gained a lot of possession at centre field.  All the forwards worked well with all six forward contributing to the score line.

Intermediate Championship

Clooney GAA: Clooney Quin 5-14 Éire Óg

Clooney Quin hosted Éire Óg in the final round of the intermediate championship on Saturday afternoon. While the outcome of this match would have no impact on semi-final qualifications, with Clooney already topping the table going into this match with 3 wins in the round games and a game in hand v Corofin and Éire Óg with just one win in the opening round, both sides gave it all they had. Played in heavy underfoot conditions with a blustering wind, the home side had a comprehensive win over a young Éire Óg side. A strong showing saw Clooney go in at the half time break boasting a 3-8-to-0–5-point advantage.

Clooney had a strong start to the second half also, outscoring Éire Óg by 1-03 to a single point in the opening 5 minutes. The Townies found themselves numerically disadvantaged in the 10th minute as one of their players was forced to the sideline following an injury. With no bench to call on, Éire Óg did their best to hold Clooney in check, but the home side still managed to add a further 1-03 to their tally leaving the final score at 5-14 to 0-06

Bodyke GAA: Whitegate 2-12 Clarecastle/Ballyea 1-7

Whitegate travelled to Bodyke for Round 5 of the Intermediate Championship where they took on Clarecastle/Ballyea and emerged victorious on a score line of 2-12 to 1-07.  This was the final game before the semi-final stage and Whitegate were anxious for a good outcome here.  It was Whitegate that started the stronger team and the sliother was won straight away by Susan Fahy and she followed with a quick lay off to Aideen Hickey who went on a solo run and then fired the ball over the bar to get the opening score of the game.  Whitegate dominated for the opening ten minutes of the match as Clarecastle/Ballyea struggled to get the sliothar past mid field.  A converted free from Susan Fahy and a further point from play from Aideen Hickey gave Whitegate the start they wanted.  Whitegate drove on and soon after raised the first green flag of the match when a shot was hit in towards Greta Hickey, who quickly gathered it and buried it to the back of the Clarecastle/Ballyea net.  Clarecastle/Ballyea were stunned by Whitegate’s intensity in the opening period of the match. Clarecastle/Ballyea got their first score when a Doireann Murphy free struck from out near the side-line made its way over the head of the Whitegate goalie and to the back of the net. A quick response came from Whitegate when Greta Hickey gathered the ball and with a little flick passed it to sister Aideen who put it between the Clarecastle/Ballyea posts. Clarecastle/Ballyea made a comeback before the first water break and added a brace of points to their tally both coming from play.   After the water break and before half time Clarecastle/Ballyea added another point to their scoresheet while Whitegate built on their lead with two further points, one of which came from Aideen Hickey following a pass from Leana Spazzi.  The other point for Whitegate came from the hurley of Susan Fahy from play.  At half time the score was Whitegate 1-6 Clarecastle/Ballyea 1-3.

With still only the puck of a ball between the teams all was to play for in the second half. Whitegate again started the stronger in the second half and all scores in this quarter coming from Susan Fahy. Fahy converted two frees and a further point coming from play.  She also raised another green flag for Whitegate when Aideen Hickey scurried up the field with the sliothar and she made a quick pass across to Fahy who made no mistake and she struck the ball with power past the Clarecastle/Ballyea goalie. Clarecastle/Ballyea in this quarter scored two points from placed balls and a further point from play.  Going into the last quarter Whitegate had built up a healthy lead of six points.  Whitegate finished the stronger when a foul on Abigail Starr gave Fahy the opportunity to convert a free.  Fahy herself was fouled a short time later and again she converted this free with ease.  The last score of the game came from Aideen Hickey when she scored a point after receiving a crafty pass from Katie Hynes.  Soon after the final whistle blew and it was Whitegate’s day when they came out on top by a margin of eight points.

Tulla GAA: Tulla 2-16 Corofin 1-9

Tulla and Corofin played a very entertaining game in a windy Dr. Daly Park. Tulla got off to a good start with a point scored by Jennifer Nicholas directly from throw in. Sinead Conlon followed this with a point from play. Tulla defended well in the first half and kept the Corofin forward line under control however, Corofin broke through Tulla’s defence and Aoibheann Malone split the posts. Tulla’s goal came in the second quarter from Jennifer Nicholas after a great passing move between the Tulla forwards. Corofin responded well and points from Aoibheann Malone from play and placed ball and from Eva O Dea to put the minimum between the sides at the break and it was all to play for, for both teams.

Corofin came out with great fighting spirit in the second half and were not letting Tulla have it all their own way. Aoibheann Malone and Eva O’Dea added points. Tulla responded with points from Bridin Dinan from two placed balls to keep Tulla in front. Tulla had to up the ante after Corofin levelled the game with a goal from Louise Browne.  At 1-7 a piece it was all to play for and the crowd fully got behind both teams with it all to play for coming into the last water break.  Tulla added points from Bridin Dinan and Sinead Conlon and a goal from Aoife Dooley ensured Tulla built up a lead going into the final few minutes. Junior A Championship

Miltown GAA: Kilkishen/Bodyke 1-4 Inagh Kilnamona 4-19

Kilkishen/Bodyke made the long journey to Miltown on Friday evening to play Inagh Kilnamona in the Junior A Championship under lights.  The game was more competitive than the final scoreline of 4-19 to 2-5 suggests with Inagh Kilnamona registering their second win.

Chloe McNamara got Inagh Kilnamona on the scoreboard with an excellent point from an acute angle to open the scoring.  Indeed, Inagh Kilnamona had another 1-4 (Tara Rynne and Muireann Daffy both with a point and Amy Shannon 1-2) on the board before Kilkishen/Bodyke got their first point in the eleventh minute from a free. McNamara put over her second point and Kilkishen/Bodyke goaled from a placed ball before the water break. Inagh Kilnamona added a further 2-6 before half time and despite Kilkishen/Bodyke excellent efforts they failed to register any scores, half time score Inagh Kilnamona 3-12 Kilkishen/Bodyke 1-1.

Inagh Kilnamona carried their momentum into the second half and with some excellent team play throughout the field added 1-7 to their half time tally, while Kilkishen Bodyke managed to convert three points to theirs.

Broadford GAA: Broadford 1-10 Ruan/Crusheen 1-10

Both teams served up a close and exciting contest in the final round of the Junior A Championship. The breeze had an influence on proceedings favouring the home team in the first half. Ruans defence was under pressure from the very start, however coped well working the ball out to players in space.

The home team made the brighter start, and got the opening score. There then followed an exchange of points between the teams which saw the game flow from end to end. Good pressure from the Ruan forwards saw a clearance blocked and from the recycled ball, the game’s opening goal from Ruan’s Louise McDonnell, for them to take the lead. Broadford finished the half stronger and had it all square at half time.

A slow start to the second half by the visitors saw Broadford score a goal and a point in quick succession just after the restart. However, the Ruan players stepped it up and had a period of dominance that saw them peg back the hosts and take the lead going into the last few minutes. The last score came from a free for Broadford that left honours even at 1-10 each at the final whistle.

Some super play, skills and score taking was on show, as both sides served up a high quality, exciting game of Camogie.
