On a glorious evening, Wednesday last, the U14B Shield final between Newmarket-on-Fergus and St. Josephs DB was a highly competitive and entertaining match, where St. Josephs DB were victorious on a score line of 3-10 to 4-01.

Newmarket started stronger in the opening half, with the first point over the cross-bar by Amy Madden within seconds of the match starting. Not long afterwards it was followed by an excellent goal by Newmarket’s Kaci Toomey. St. Joseph's were lucky not to concede more during this opening phase due to the immense pressure of the Newmarket’s forward and half forward lineout. But Katie Callaghan’s free taking excelled throughout for St. Joseph's, which was remarkable for this age level. Avril Lillis, Sinead O'Connor, Hannah Doyle, worked tirelessly through the game for St Josephs. Sophie Torphy scored a much-needed point from play for St. Joseph's. Grace Butler was solid in goal for St. Joseph's and could not be faulted for any of the goals, two of which were scored in quick succession minutes before the half-time whistle blew. This saw Newmarket deservedly leading 3-01 to St. Joseph's 0-05 at half-time.

The second half saw a resurgent St. Joseph's turn the tide on Newmarket with much improved performances throughout. St. Joseph's outscored Newmarket by 11 points in the second half, with goals coming from Amber Piggott, Sinead O'Connor and Katie Callaghan. Newmarket’s only score in the second half came from a goal by Emma Crowe. Newmarket goalie Grace McMahon made some great saves on the night and Saoirse Reidy, Nora McInerney and Lucy Enright worked tirelessly throughout for Newmarket.

Ella Bohannon and Oriana O'Shea found their groove in defence for St Joseph’s while around the middle Laura Butler, Shauna Moloney and Eimear Clune took control. Up front Aisling McDonagh and Amber Pigott were dominant. Full forwards Jemma Leathem & Ellen Mannion worked tirelessly and were replaced by the fearless and energetic 12-year olds Rachel Mahony and Kate Moran.
