Final Score Kilkishen Bodyke 1-02 Scariff Ogonelloe 2-08
On one of the warmest evening of the summer so far, the East Clare teams of Kilkishen Bodyke and Scariff Ogonnelloe met in the u14A Shield Final, as the curtain raiser to the Cup Final in the camogie grounds. It was the first time that these teams had played in the flagship grounds and there was a real air of excitement among the teams and supporters. These teams had met previously in the competition with only a puck of the ball separating them at the finish so it was game on. The first fifteen minutes were very lively with scores exchanged by either side and the scores stayed at two points to one in favour of Scariff Ogonnelloe, until a break through moment when center forward Labhaoise O'Donnell sent through a rocket of a ball which hit the back of the net. The Derg side fowards tagged on a few more points, including a suberb point from play by forward Lorraine Grady who pointed from the tightest of angles. This left the score 1-4 to 0-1 at half time.
Kilkishen Bodyke came out of the blocks with great intensity in the second half. Eimear Murphy, who had worked tremendously hard in the first half covering a huge amount of ground, broke through midfield, off loaded to Megan Kilkenny, who struck for an unstoppable goal. With now just a goal between them, the intensity of the game was raised, as was the noise of the crowd, which now included the two cup teams and their supporters. The narrow lead was to be extended very quickly though as midfielder Abby Walsh launched a high ball into the square, which got touched on by corner forward Maeve O'Brien into the goals. A few more points got added on from 45s by Abby Walsh and from play by Labhaoise O'Donnell who was played in great ball by midfielder Robyn McKenna. This play included great saves by goalie Chloe O'Brien and backs Katie Frost. Abby Heffernan and Fina Close. However, it was to be the Scariff Ogonnelloe goalie and backs that were to take the pressure for the last ten minutes as the Kilkishen Bodyke girls fought hard for more scores. Wing forward Leah Minogue, who pointed a 45, had to be kept well guarded by Aine Scanlon. But sterling play from full back Roisin Collins, centre back Bonnie Wiley Murphy, corner back Dearbhla McNulty and top class saves by goalie Emily Domini meant that no further scores were added and the final score remained at 2-8 to 1-2. The girls, of which so many play school camogie together, congratulated each other for a great sporting game, in the scorching heat and all stayed around to watch joint captains Bonnie Wiley Murphy and Abby Walsh accept the shield on behalf of the Scariff Ogonnelloe team.
