Round 3 :

U13A

30.8.18 @6.30pm
Scarriff Ogonnelloe 0.4 v Crusheen 3.9 @ Ogonelloe GAA

The third round of the U13A championship took place in ideal conditions in Ogonolloe. The game started at a frenetic pace with the home team looking to establish their home advantage and took the game to Crusheen. Ogonolloe enjoyed good possession in the early exchanges and put the Crusheen defence under extreme pressure in the early on and were rewarded with the first score, a point from  Dannielle Beaten. Despite their early dominance they could not add to this and Crusheen began to exert their influence. Their half back line began to dominate and started to provide a good supply to the Crusheen forwards and they found themselves on level terms with a free from Mary Hanrahan. The second quarter  saw Crusheen dominate with further points from Mary Hanrahan and Faye Dean.  The pressure was beginning to build and a first time effort from Rachel O Brien whistled just past the Ogonolloe goal. Crusheen,s dominance was evident and a delivery from Grace Glesson caused panic in the Ogonolloe defence. Siomha Perill,s effort was blocked on the line and Aoife Rodgers was on hand to finish the rebound to the net for the first goal of the game. Ogonnelloe tagged on two points towards the end of the first half to keep in touch to leave the half time score 1-5 to 0-3 to the visitors.

The second half needed Ogonnelloe to take the game to Crusheen and this they did . A fine run saw  Dannielle Beaten score a fine point to cut the gap. They continued to pile on the pressure but could not breach the Crusheen full back line of Aimee Colleran and Hannah Gleeson. Crusheen,s first score of the second half was a fine long range free from Faye Dean. This was soon followed by the second goal of the game. Hannah Gleeson bursting out of Crusheen defence delivered a long ball to Mary Hanrahan who finished expertly to the top corner of the net  to extend Crusheen,s lead. The home team valiantly tried to cut the deficit but found the Crusheen half back line of Caoimhe Clancy Grace Gleeson and Ella Kearneyin no mood to surrender any ball. A fine team move saw Caoilinn Perill hand off to Mary Hanrahan to score a fine point. The final score of the game saw Hannah Gleeson find the net from a longe range free to leave Crusheen with two wins from their first two group games.

Tulla v Wolfe Tones

Friday 31st August 2018

Venue: Shannon Camogie Field

Referee: Mary Jordan

Final Score: Tulla 5-3 Wolfe Tones 3-4

Tulla girls travelled to Wolfe Tones' home ground in the third round of this Championship. The match began with an immediate attack from Tulla. Within the first minute of play, a pass by Georgia O' Brien to Hannah Foley who dropped the sliotar with precision at Sorcha Murphy's feet, resulted in a wonderful strike to see Tulla's first goal of the match.  Less than three minutes later, the same trio were involved in an almost identical sequence of play which led to another at the back of the Wolfe Tones net. Wolfe Tone's determination to have their prescence felt in the game provided their first goal on the seventh minute. Most of the play continued around midfield in the following minutes, when Aoibhín Rochford received a pass from Katelyn Leamy via Erica Maher which saw Tulla's third goal scored. The pressure on the Tulla goal was mounting with two points from play and a third point from a free by Wolfe Tones. Aimee Ryan cleared a dangerous ball to provide Aoibhín Rochford with an opportunity to once again hit the back of the Wolfe Tones net. However, Wolfe Tones responded with two goals in quick succession to level the match. Just before the half time whistle, an excellent puck out by Méabh Rochford was met by Hannah Foley who was very unlucky the sliotar didn't convert to goal. A point from play by Hannah during the first minute of the second half as a result of a fabulous hand pass by Ciara Tuohy placed Tulla in pole position. However, Wolfe Tones steely determination meant they fought for every ball. Two saves by Méabh Rochford and consistent defending by Danara Crowe, Roisín Murphy, Sarah Byrnes, Niamh Lennon, Leah McInerney and Aimee Ryan kept the opposition scoreless during this passage of play. Katie Clune influenced midfield when she replaced Georgia O' Brien, who was substituted due to injury after an excellent performance. Molly Higgins fed a number of balls just outside the Wolfe Tone goal which were unfortunate not to be converted with scores, bar a point from Aoibhín Rochford. Kate O' Grady, Caoimhe Egan, Sarah Byrnes and Ava Crowe made an impact in the second half when members of the starting team were retired due to injury and fatigue. Tulla was awarded a free ten minutes from the final whistle as a result of foul on Lisa Nicholas, which Aoibhín placed at the right hand corner of the Wolfe Tones goal. Aoibhín Rochford scored a final point which cemented Tulla as worthy winners after a hard fought battle in declining weather conditions, as a heavy mist descended and the light began to fade.

Under 13C Championship

Whitegate v Éire Óg @ Whitegate GAA 01/09/18 @ 10.30am

Ref : John Healy ( Smith O’Briens )

Half time score : Whitegate 1-0 Éire Óg 2-02

Full Time score : Whitegate 2-3 Éire Óg 4-03

Éire Óg took the points home from a sunny Whitegate on Saturday morning following a hard-earned victory at a fine Whitegate GAA club grounds.

The sides were well matched in the early stages with some excellent play from both sides. Éire Óg then began to take control around the midfield area with Ella Cahill opening the scoring with a well taken point from 35m after 5 minutes. From the resultant puck out Cahill again gained possession and found Annie Lynch in space with a great pass and Lynch struck a brilliant shot to the bottom corner of the Whitegate net. This setback stirred Whitegate into action and they really started to apply pressure to the Éire Óg defence which held firm thanks to a fantastic Niamh Davies save and then some last ditch defending to force a wide from Whitegate’s Abigail Starr.

The Whitegate pressure eventually told when Starr goaled with a fantastic finish to the Éire Óg net in the 15th minute of the first half. Éire Óg’s reply was almost instant with another excellent Ella Cahill point from 30m in the 17th minute, followed quickly by a goal from Cahill to push Éire Óg into a 2-02 to 1-00 lead as the game edged towards half time. Whitegate again took the game to Éire Óg for the rest of the first half with Abigail Starr and Lana McDermott causing problems for the Town side and it took some heroic defending from Irene Boateng and Rachel Russell, before a fine goal line clearance from Éire Óg keeper Niamh Davies kept the hosts at bay and there were no further scores before referee Healy’s half time whistle saw Éire Óg take a 5 point lead into the break.

The second half began as did the first with the play flowing from end to end and Whitegate came agonisingly close to opening the scoring when Abigail Starr, who was proving to be a real thorn in Éire Óg’s side, drove through the Éire Óg defence only to be denied by a super save from Niamh McManus, who had replaced Niamh Davies in the Éire Óg net at half time. The resulting goal mouth scramble led to important defensive interventions from Ruth Nihill and Irene Boateng and eventually a long clearance from Rachel Russell lifted the Whitegate siege on the Townies’ goal. Éire Óg moved the ball up the field with some nice passing from Sarah Murphy and Annie Lynch and earned a free on the 40m mark. Ella Cahill converted the free with a great strike to increase her side’s lead to 6 points as the game hit the 30th minute.

Whitegate’s response to an Éire Óg score was impressive all through the game and they replied to Cahill’s free with a goal of their own as a shot from 25m crept past the Town defence and into the corner of the net to reduce the deficit to 3 points. It was game on again and a passage of really competitive play followed as both defences worked tirelessly to keep their opponents at bay. Some more really good defending from Irene Boateng (whose battle with Abigail Starr all through the contest was fantastic) led to a clearance up the pitch which yielded a free for Éire Óg 40m from the Whitegate goal. Cahill struck the free well and it dropped to the Whitegate net for a welcome goal for the visitors, who now led 3-03 to 2-00 as the clock ticked past the half way point of the second half. Further Town attacks were repelled by some excellent Whitegate play. The home defence was superbly led by Caoimhe Whelan who constantly cleared her lines when required. A brilliant Hillary Kearnes save then kept her side in contention as the game moved into the last 10 minutes. This gave Whitegate great impetus and series of attacks yielded two points in quick succession. The first came from Starr who mopped up an Éire Óg clearance to fire over from 25m, and then a brilliant save from Éire Óg goalie McManus saw her turn another Starr effort wide. Corinne Hynes pointed the resultant 45 to leave the score 3-03 to 2-02 as the game entered the last 5 minutes.

Éire Óg needed some breathing space at this stage, and it was Ella Cahill who again provided it, with a timely goal for the visitors to restore their seven point lead. Again though Whitegate replied with another excellent point from Starr which reduced the deficit to 2 pucks of the ball as the game ticked towards the end. Another super McManus save from Starr, a timely flick away from danger from Rachel Murphy, and some real last ditch defending saw Éire Óg repel Whitegate’s valiant efforts and when referee John Healy brought the game to an end Éire Óg were relieved, but deserved victors on a scoreline of 4-03 to 2-03.

In what was an excellent advert for Under 13 Camogie, Ella Cahill, with a contribution  of 3-03, Irene Boateng, Rachel Russell, Annie Lynch, and Kaitlyn Ferns , especially in the second half, led the charge for Éire Óg, while Whitegate had excellent performances from Lana McDermott, Caoimhe Whelan, Emma Waterstone, Corinne Hynes, and the heroic Abigail Starr.

Éire Óg team : Niamh Davies, Irene Boateng, Rachel Murphy, Riona Hely, Rachel Russell, Niamh McManus, Ella Cahill (3-03), Kaitlyn Ferns, Sarah Murphy, Sarah Broderick, Annie Lynch (1-00), Liadan Ni Ghlaisne, Aoife Moylan, Sarah Gannon
